NTSB: Western states doing well with boating safety

June 2009 News

Speaking at this week's Western States Boating Administrators Association Conference, National Transportation Safety Board acting chairman Mark V. Rosenker praised Western states for advancing the cause of boating safety.

He said the Western states have accomplished 75 to 100 percent of the actions recommended by the NTSB, including mandatory boating safety education programs, mandatory personal flotation device wear for children and for anyone aboard a personal watercraft, and training for people renting PWC.

"But even with all of these important accomplishments, much remains to be done," Rosenker said in his presentation. "Recreational boating safety continues to be an extremely important area of focus of the NTSB."

He challenged the conference attendees to continue to do more for recreational boating safety.

"Let's continue to make a difference and let's get these basic sound safety practices in place in every state," he said. "Our commitment to boating safety can lead to further reductions in recreational boating fatalities, injuries and accidents."
