BoatU.S. foundation awards clean water and boating safety grants

ANNAPOLIS, Md., July 29, 2009 - The BoatU.S. Foundation continues its mission of helping boating communities across the country by awarding its 2009 Clean Water and boating safety grants to 19 local non-profit groups. Combined, nearly $50,000 was awarded to these groups to develop creative projects that address environmental problems on local waterways and promote safe boating.

Over the past 20 years, the Foundation has awarded over $1.1 million to local boating and environmental organizations. This year's Clean Water Grant projects covered a wide range of environmental topics, while the Boating Safety Grants focused on efforts aimed at reducing alcohol related fatalities. The 2009 grantees are:

BoatU.S. Foundation Clean Water Grantees:

CT: Norwich Power Squadron, Norwich: To produce and distribute a brochure on the importance of keeping plastic out of waterways and a reusable cloth bag containing messaging on marine debris.

DC: Anacostia Riverkeeper, Washington: To create and distribute a brochure to educate boaters on marine debris and ways to reduce it in the Anacostia River watershed.

FL: Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful, Tampa: To produce mini monofilament recycling bins and educational material that will be distributed to local boaters.

MD: Assateague Coastal Trust, Berlin: To create a brochure that provides practical information on environmentally-friendly boat cleaning practices and how to prevent the spread of invasive species and to create a rack card that will educate boaters on proper waste pump-out practices and pumpout locations in the area.

ME: Lakes Environmental Association, Bridgton: To create brochures and other educational materials on invasive species to be used during on-the-water educational tours.

MI: Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, Petoskey: To produce a "Boater Bundles" that will include brochures on various clean boating and invasive species topics.

MI: Western Upper Peninsula Cooperative Weed and Pest Management Area, Crystal Falls: To produce billboards to educate boaters on invasive species.

MN: Wildlife Forever, Brooklyn Center: To create billboards to educate boaters on invasive species.

PA: Lacawac Sanctuary Foundation Inc., Lake Ariel: To produce signage and flyers to educate boaters on invasive species.

TX: Seadrift Sail and Yacht Club, Port Lavaca: To create mini monofilament recycling bins that will be distributed to local boaters.

BoatU.S. Foundation Boating Safety Grantees:

FL: St. Lucie River Power Squadron, Hope Sound: To produce tide charts that contain information on alcohol and boating.

GA: Black Boaters Club of America, Inc., Riverdale: To produce a radio and video public service announcement on boating safety topics including alcohol and boating.

KY: Friends of Barren River Lake, Glasgow: To create signage promoting the use of proper lighting during nighttime boating, and to create signage to raise awareness regarding alcohol and boating.

ME: YES! Program, Portland: To create a TV program and public service announcement on the dangers of alcohol and boating.

MO: SEMO Regional Water Safety Council, Inc., Wappapello: To produce a whistle keychain with light and compass that contains safety messaging regarding alcohol and boating.

NC: Kinston Sail and Power Squadron, Kinston: To produce chart brochures and signs for the Neuse River.

NY: Going Coastal, Inc., New York: To create a "Boat Sober NYC" campaign to educate boaters on alcohol and boating safety.

TX: USCGA 08-07-05, San Antonio: To create a public service announcement promoting the use of life jackets while boating.

WA: North Olympic Sail & Power Squadron, Sequim: To produce a brochure and banner to educate boaters about alcohol and boating.
