Mercury, Evinrude team up to fight diabetes

September 2009 News

Employees from outboard manufacturers Mercury Marine and Evinrude will team up against the Oshkosh Ice Devils this weekend in a hockey match to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The game begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the YMCA in Oshkosh, Wis.

The pairing of players from Fond du Lac-based Mercury and the Evinrude outboards operation in Sturtevant, Wis., was the brainstorm of Oshkosh hockey enthusiast John Davids, a former Mercury employee.

He was asked by his neighbor, former Boating magazine editor Charles Plueddeman, to contribute to the 2009 JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes. Plueddeman will ride 105 miles on a bicycle Oct. 17 through Death Valley, Calif., to raise money for the charity.

"I thought we could do more to support Charles than just make a single donation," said Davids, now a financial representative at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network in Oshkosh, in a statement. "Mercury and Evinrude do not often work together, but JDRF is a great cause, and this is an excellent excuse to get some good players skating on an all-star outboard team. It should be a lot of fun."
