DEP, boaters together on Facebook

August 2010 News

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has joined the real world, Last week the DEP announced that Division of Boating now has a presence on the social networking site, Facebook.

The shortcut to access the site is www.facebook.com/BoatingInConnecticut.

The DEP Boating Facebook page features a variety of information on boating in Connecticut. Upcoming events, safe boating tips, and ways to contact the Boating Division are among the items that can be found on the Facebook page.

"The DEP sees Facebook as a valuable way to talk to boaters about the many opportunities for enjoying Connecticut's beautiful waters this summer and all year long. It is also a way to make sure boaters understand the importance of safe boating when they are out on the water," said DEP Deputy Commissioner Susan Frechette. "The DEP is using Facebook, along with other outreach activities such as the education vessel, Prudence to make sure boaters are using safe boating practices like wearing personal flotation devices. Boating is a fun and exciting way for people to enjoy the outdoors but always needs to be done in a safe, `prudent' manner."

Facebook is a social network launched in 2004 that allows users to add friends, post personal information, and obtain information about groups and activities that interest them. Facebook is generally regarded as the most used social network worldwide. The DEP Facebook page contains boating-related news items, event schedules, contact information for the Division of Boating, and an area for people to "like" the DEP page so that they have instant access to up-to-date boating information.
