Just 12 days after 2010 began, the Coast Guard was in Haiti responding to the aftermath of a devastating earthquake. In April, the agency was on the scene in the Gulf of Mexico in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster.
In addition to these response efforts, the Coast Guard saved more than 4,300 lives, responded to more than 22,000 search-and-rescue cases, prevented more than 200,000 pounds of cocaine from reaching the United States, boarded more than 2,100 "high interest vessels" bound for U.S. ports, interdicted nearly 4,700 undocumented migrants attempting to illegally enter the United States, and conducted more than 5,000 fisheries conservation boardings.
The Coast Guard's Top 11 Videos of 2010 gives a glimpse into some of the work its men and women performed in the course of the year. It's a Top 11 list rather than a Top 10 to symbolize the agency's 11 statutory mission areas:
