Lake Augusta Outfitters begins second season at Marina

May 2011 News
SUNBURY - It's spring. Time to kayak, canoe and jet ski.

And Lake Augusta Outfitters is pushing forward, despite the obstacles presented by the soaking the Valley has endured since Jan. 1.

Angela Troutman began her second season April 30.

The rental and convenience shop for boaters and outdoor enthusiasts in the Shikellamy State Park Marina includes a variety of water and land equipment, including a pontoon boat that seats nine people, a Kawaski Jet Ski that seats three, three kayaks, a canoe, two tandem bikes and two trike bikes.

The store also sells gasoline for boaters, boating supplies and refreshments.

Troutman opened the shop last June in a small building along the Susquehanna River with hopes of encouraging Valley residents and visitors to use the river more often.

With involvement in recreation for more than 15 years, she approached the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources with the idea of opening the business.

Lake Augusta Outfitters also offers an educational and historic tour on a pontoon boat or kayak.

Troutman was the first person in more than two years to show interest in opening up shop near the river, said DCNR spokeswoman Christina Novak.

"The concession was bid out unsuccessfully and we had no bidders, so it remained empty for at least a year," she said. "Then we were approached by them with a business plan, and we negotiated the agreement."

Lake Augusta Outfitters has a five-year agreement at $2,000 per year, Novak said of the business that offers boater education certification to those who don't have a boating license. Individuals wishing to operate a boat or personal watercraft watch an 11-minute video and take a short test created by the state Fish and Boat Commission.

The business is open weekends only - or by reservation - until May 28, when it will offer rentals of pontoon boats, personal watercraft, kayaks, canoes and bikes seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
