West Marine raises nearly $28,000 for Fort Lauderdale charities

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The West Marine Fort Lauderdale Boating Superstore celebrated its grand opening by hosting a "Cruising for a Cause" event to raise money for local marine charities. In all, West Marine raised $27,800 for 13 non-profits.

"We have received a tremendous outpouring support from the community for our new flagship store and we sure appreciate it," Geoff Eisenberg, CEO of West Marine, said in a release. "In keeping with the company's mission of conserving marine habitats and supporting local marine non-profits, we knew that hosting Cruising for a Cause during our grand opening was a great way to give back to the community."

Charities that benefited from "Cruising for a Cause" include the BoatU.S. Foundation, NOVA Southeastern University Oceanographic Center, the Guy Harvey Foundation, Shake-A-Leg Miami, Veterans Ocean Adventures, Freedom Waters Foundation, the Miami Dolphin Foundation, Hook the Future, the Snook & Gamefish Foundation, Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club, Cry of the Water, The International SeaKeepers Society and Marine Industry Cares.
