Cedar Falls man takes first place in pontoon race

January 2012 News

BOATING: Cedar Falls businessman Terry Kuchenberg participated in Pontoon and Deck Boat Magazine's annual pontoon boat test review and Pontoon Boat Shootout on Oct. 3-4 in Shelbyville, Ill.

The purpose of the event is to evaluate and rank pontoons on their performance and handling.

Kuchenberg, who owns Midwest Boats Sales & Repair in Cedar Falls ran a 2012 PlayCraft 2800 X-Treme pontoon, which is 28 feet long and powered by an 8.2-liter, 430-horsepower MerCruiser.

More than 30 pontoon manufacturers from across the country sent their highest performance pontoons to compete. Kuchenberg captured first place in his category, exceeding 60 mph during the barrel race.

The pontoon barrel race is much like a traditional horse barrel race. The pontoons navigate a course marked with buoys.
