While boating over these last 50 plus years, one of the most pleasurable times our entire family recalls is when we would find a calm anchorage, set the Danforth anchor and enjoy a nice meal someplace out in the middle of nowhere. Looking back decades later, as we cruised the Great Lakes we seldom paid for dockage or had our meals ashore. Even though we didn’t have refrigeration on our mid-sized trailerable boat, we still had some quite tasty and memorable meals aboard.

Fresh fish in many varieties were available offshore from the many commercial fishing boats, but most all these boats were under strict contracts and were unable to sell us any of their daily catch but we were always looking to find a way. Scanning the far-off horizons, we would spot flocks of sea gulls flying about, which meant a commercial fishing boat was in that vicinity.
