Customized Dreams

February 2017 Brady L. Kay

“We wanted all the bells and whistles and we got them,” said Ron Rice from the passenger seat of his custom-built pontoon. Best known in the sun care product industry as the founder of Hawaiian Tropic, Rice is supposed to be enjoying the retired life after selling his company in 2007, but even in his late 70s he’s not one to slow down.

Today he’s anchored out in the water, not far from Daytona Beach in Florida on his 27-foot custom pontoon that was specially built just for him by Bahamas Pontoon Boats. Although surrounded by what Rice refers to as “two-legged gators,” he wanted a custom pontoon that would let the University of Florida fans in his area know he’s an alum of the University of Tennessee and a rival to the Gators. The white and orange checkerboard pattern on the side after the UT end zone helps him get his message across.
