Protomet Corporation, an Oak Ridge-based engineering, manufacturing and technology company, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with new products, new equipment, expansion and rapid growth. You may know Protomet for the PTM Edge Watersports brand that makes and markets boating mirrors and wakeboard tower components for boats of all kinds. After all, the PTM Edge product line has won numerous awards including the IBEX Innovation Award for its panoramic mirrors and ski/wake towers.

"Two of our core values at Protomet are 'find a way to deliver' and 'help the customer succeed'," Bohanan said. "The company's growth, our physical expansion, and the new products we are bringing to market are all tied directly to these core values."

Since 1997 Protomet Corporation has been a world-class provider of engineering and manufacturing solutions and services. In addition to comprehensive design services, Protomet  provides high-precision production manufacturing and finishing for clients, not only in the boating industry, but also including automotive, homeland security, industrial, energy and power.

In the past 12 months, Protomet has invested more than $4 million in new equipment to expand capabilities including a multi-pallet 5-axis machining center bringing a new level of automation to the company's Oak Ridge plant. The new equipment supports Protomet's work with the Department of Homeland Security. For the first time in the company's two-decade history, Protomet recently released a universal-mount mirror bracket system and an aftermarket clamping board rack designed specifically for the boating industry.

Last year, Protomet announced plans to expand its operations with an additional 100,000 square-foot facility and 200 new jobs over the next five years.

In 2013, Protomet more than doubled the size of its Oak Ridge operations when the company opened a $7 million plant expansion that included 40,000 square-feet of new space and high-tech manufacturing equipment from around the world.

"Protomet is a company that proves you can succeed - in a very big way - by listening to the customers you serve," said Jeff Bohanan, founder and CEO of Protomet. "We started this business 20 years ago because we recognized a need in the marketplace, and for two decades we have been identifying challenges and needs and solving them for our customers.  It has been said of our company that we make the impossible, possible."
