PDB Tested: TRUE Utility

EDC Essentials Kit

Published in the February 2022 Issue October 2024 PDB Tested, Feature Roy Sparks

My deepest apologies to my friend for whom I originally ordered the EDC Essential Kit. Once it arrived after placing my order I just couldn’t part with it. I ended up getting him something else because of lack of time. Before you judge me, you really need to take a closer look at this kit from TRUE UTILITY.

This is a great product from a company which was born out of the desire to do a lot with a little. By eliminating unnecessary bells and whistles, TRUE has designed tools that are compact, easy to use and get the job done, and this kit has it all.

The EDC Essentials Kit basically takes TRUE’s top items and puts them together in one kit for $99. The SmartKnife+ alone makes the kit worth it, but it also comes with a SCRYBE multi-tool pen, plasma lighter, power bank and a carrying case.

The SMARTKNIFE+ is a 15-in-1 multi-tool pocket knife that retails for $34.99 by itself. And unlike other multi-tool knives that look cool but don’t really function, this Texas-based manufacturer delivers.

The SCRYBE pen has a variety of features too, including a bubble level, flat and Phillips micro bit as well as being a retractable ballpoint pen. Not that you can really pick favorites in this kit, but the plasma lighter really is an attention-grabber. No gas, just a Micro USB rechargeable lighter that is windproof up to 80 mph! Most pontoons and deck boats have USB charging ports these days, but if not, the kit includes a power bank to keep your plasma lighter all charged up. Very impressive. This really is a kit that a lot of boaters will appreciate, including my friend for whom I just placed another order. I hope he gets it this time.
