Fall weather brings more residents outside

October 2010 News

SEBASTIAN - Light breezes and slightly cooler temperatures mark the beginning of Florida fall weather and Indian River County residents are ready to enjoy some outdoor fun without blazing temperatures.

Last week, Donna Goodridge enjoyed a morning cruise on the St. Sebastian River for the first time, though she has lived and boated in the area for nearly 20 years.

Capt. Kathleen Benjamin of Mangrove Mama Riverboat Cruises takes passengers up and down the river and the Indian River Lagoon daily. She said the weather is perfect to be out on the water.

Clear blue skies, sunshine and a fresh breeze are a winning combination for a cruise on the water in her pontoon boat, Capt. Benjamin said.

Most people are aware of and enjoy the beauty of the ocean and the Indian River Lagoon, but the St. Sebastian River is a little hidden jewel, too, passengers on the cruise said.

"I've lived here since 1991 and we have three boats and we've never been down here," Ms. Goodridge said.

"I really can't believe we've never done this, this is beautiful," she said.

During the tour, Capt. Benjamin pointed out various plant species to passengers, providing historical information about vegetation and the Old Florida landscape.

Palm trees, endangered ferns and mangroves fill the small land masses with varying colors of greens and yellows and browns, giving visitors a peek at what pioneers saw when they first arrived in the area.
