32 workers to be laid off at Mercury Marine

August 2006 News

Ten machinists at Plant 4 and 22 workers at Plant 15, the company's outboard assembly plant, will be laid off, company spokesman Steve Fleming said today. A majority of the 22 assembly workers were told they could anticipate possible layoffs when they were hired last year, he said.

The layoffs, which were announced last Friday, are part of the company's efforts to control its inventory pipeline, said Fleming.

"We are publicly held company. A publicly held company dictates that we aggressively manage pipelines and costs," said Fleming. "We're making sure we are not producing more than we need."

The company last week reported a 2 percent decline in sales and a 9 percent drop in operating earnings in the marine engine segment for the second quarter.

Mercury Marine is a division of Lake Forest, Ill.-based Brunswick Corp.
