Is Indiana Next?

November 2006 News

Indiana officials are developing a Clean Marina program for the Hoosier State, which is looking to join Michigan and Ohio which have similar programs.

The state is developing a guide book to help marinas develop environmentally friendly practices as well as a flag that marinas could fly, designating them a Clean Marina. A Web site also is under development.

Participation in the program, officials told the Northwest Indiana Times, would allow marinas to seek training opportunities and grants.

State officials say there are 18 marinas along Indiana's Lake Michigan coastline. Those marinas contain 3,000 slips and 28 launch ramps.

The program is being developed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Lake Michigan Coastal Program, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant, according to the newspaper.
