Trio teams for appeal to tourists

January 2012 News
An initiative to enhance tourists' 2012 experience in this area is being promoted by a partnership of the Trinidad History Museum, Trinidad Lake State Park and the Colorado Welcome Center.

Four tours are in the process of being planned for the period of April through October this year. The Coal Camp Pontoon Boat Tour will feature information about Sopris, a former coal camp town covered by water when a reservoir was built. The tour will also visit other sites related to coal mining. A second tour, Local Treasures: Buildings on the National Registry of Historic Places, will feature a wide variety of buildings in the area which have architectural and cultural significance. The third is a Historic Cemetery Tour, which also includes a tour along the scenic Highway of Legends.

All the tours include a presentation and lunch; fees will be charged and registration will be required. Special rates will be available for volunteers at the welcome center, lake and museum. Further details and dates will be released at a later date.

The tourism group has added a feature that will make touring the area even more attractive. Passport with a Prize allows visitors who purchase both a lake pass and a museum ticket to get their ticket punched at both attractions. They can then take the ticket to the welcome center to claim a free prize. The lake and museum will also give discount coupons to anyone who rides the Trinidad Trolley and rides the COG bus to the lake.

The tourism team includes Tara Marshall, director of the Colorado Welcome Center in Trinidad, Paula Manini of History Colorado's Trinidad History Museum and Trinidad Lake State Park manager Heath Kehm. Each facility is part of wider network, which will help the trio in promoting the programs to tourists statewide.
