Product Test No. 39: Portable Light

Published in the May 2009 Issue May 2009

You don't realize how many different tasks you do while fighting darkness until you get your hands, or in this case your head, on a portable headlight. I tried out the 0.5 Watt LED Headlight from Coghlan's last summer and was surprised at how useful it was. Suddenly snapping the boat cover in the pitch black night wasn't such a big deal.

Obviously the biggest advantage to having the Headlight is that both of your hands are now free to do other things besides hold a flashlight. With the focused beam, the Headlight did more than just put off some light in the general area, it allowed me to specifically concentrate on the task at hand. The LED light provides a direct, unfaltering beam of light for 9.5 hours at a time, while the emergency strobe feature flashes up to 33 hours. Weighing just 4.2 ounces with batteries, the strap fits comfortably and lightly around the head and with a suggested retail price of $14.83 it's comfortable on your wallet too.

As far as ratings, I don't know how you couldn't give it a perfect score for being portable as well as the overall design. It's small enough that it will fit nicely in a glove box onboard so you'll have it when you need it.
