Pontoon world record to be confirmed

May 2009 News
A pontoon boat muster held in Mandurah during the Crab Fest proved to be a success with 50 boats coming from all over the Peel region to attempt to achieve a world record for the largest number of pontoon boats gathered together.

The boats assembled near the bypass bridge and finished by parading through the estuary and into one of the canals.

Organisers Graham Bishop, Ian Napier and John Bolton brought the event to fruition after many years of discussion and were delighted on the day at the stream of boats coming down the Serpentine and Murray rivers, as well as from most of the Mandurah waterways.

Sponsors who made the event possible were Mandurah Rotary, Access WA, Concise Services, the Mandurah Mail and Yunderup Ladies Jan Bishop, Fran Snable and Shirley Roberts.

Mr Bishop wished to thank all of the sponsors for their generous support.

He said that participants had really enjoyed the day and were looking forward to this being an annual event, growing in size every year.

The group elected to give part proceeds raised by the muster to Peel Health Foundation who are raising funds to build the children's ward in Mandurah.

Foundation Chairman Arthur Marshall said it would be a tremendous accolade for Mandurah to host a Guinness world record and thanked the organisers for their generous donation.

All those concerned are now waiting for the result to be ratified by the Guinness Book of World Records.
