Seniors set sail on pontoon boats

On Thursday, a new volunteer group in Otter Tail County set out on its maiden voyage -- literally.

Let's Go Fishing (LGF), a Minnesota-based volunteer organization whose Otter Tail County chapter was founded last year, equips volunteers with the tools and training they need to take seniors out on lakes in comfortable pontoon boats. Seniors can then fish, reminisce to old times on the lake, or just enjoy the beauty of their surroundings. When a group of LGF volunteers took several Pelican Rapids seniors out on the south arm of Lake Lida on a beautiful Thursday afternoon in Maplewood State Park, they were volunteering for the first official LGF event in the county.

LGF put on the event in conjunction with the Pelican Rapids OAKS organization. OAKS stands for Organizing Acts of Kindness for Seniors. OAKS sponsored the pontoon for the day, and prior to the boat outing, the volunteers and seniors shared a lunch at a picnic area in the park. The seniors came from multiple residences; some came from Riverfront Assisted Living, others from Mill Pond Apartments or other residences, and one person lived in her own home. OAKS got them all to attend the outing, and they were enjoying themselves.
