Fuel Thinkers

June 2006 News

Prices at the fuel docks are, on average, 19 percent higher than last year, and marina owners think those higher prices will curb boating activity, according to a new survey.

The Association of Marina Industries surveyed 80 marinas nationwide. Of those, 55 percent said the higher prices will inhibit active boating this year. Some said the average price increase would be 52 cents.

When asked how higher prices affected Memorial Day weekend, the traditional kickoff for the boating season, 37 percent reported activity was up; 33 percent said there was no change; and 30 percent reported a decline in activity.

Respondents also suggested ways to keep boaters coming to their marinas, including cookouts, live entertainment, fishing tournaments and other special events. Marinas also said they'd promote area shopping and dining, offer fuel discounts, spruce up marina amenities such as pools and playgrounds and host member appreciation nights.
