Teens rescue 82-year-old man from Shioc River

April 2009 News

SHIOCTON, Wis. (AP) - Two teens rescued an 82-year-old fisherman from an icy Shioc (sheye-AWK') River in Outagamie County.

Donald Nollenberg says he went to his pontoon boat at the shore behind his house about 8:30 p.m. Thursday to catch walleye. But instead of walking to a step to his raft he thought was there, he ended up in the water up to his chest and couldn't get his footing.

Jan Slater and Tanner Pingle, both 19, of Shiocton, heard a splash and his calls for help.

Shiocton (sheye-AWK'-ton) Police Chief Butch Bunnell says they left their raft, jumped in a boat and went over there. Slater jumped in and the pair pulled Nollenberg out.

Nollenberg expressed his gratitude, saying he's never been so happy to see someone jump out of a boat.
