The Magellan eXplorist 710 is an impressive handheld GPS. It’s rugged, lightweight, waterproof and completely built for those of us who enjoy the outdoor lifestyle. But it gets better. Much better. Magellan has recently released a fishing software program that you can download right to your eXplorist 710 that provides anglers with tactics and locations that catch fish.
It works fairly simply. You hook up your eXplorist to your computer, select the state you will be fishing in, pay $9.99 and then you receive an email with a link to download the software. The first time I sat down to do it, I didn’t realize I needed a Micro SD card, but a quick trip to the store resolved the problem.
I was heading to Indiana and Lake Monroe was an option in the Indiana package. When we arrived, I excitedly pulled out the device and I used it throughout the week. The software included a very detailed map and fishing information, fishing points of interests, an extremely helpful lake profile and general fishing tips and techniques. I followed the map very closely and when we arrived at a fishing hot spot, sure enough there were fish to be found. It was nice to have a handheld GPS with fishing software in one device.
